SUNet ID Sponsorship

Sponsoring SUNet IDs

At Stanford University, a SUNet ID (Stanford University Network Identifier) is essential for accessing various online services and resources. Employees receive SUNET ID’s automatically through the onboarding process but individuals who are not automatically eligible—such as contractors, visiting scholars, or temporary staff—can obtain a SUNet ID through sponsorship. SUNet ID is essentially a Stanford University computer account allowing access to Stanford systems.

SLAC leverages Stanford systems and therefore depending on job functions, there may be a need for SUNet ID sponsorship in order to access certain systems such as Google Shared Drive, Zoom, Slack, Smartsheet, Stanford training (in STARS portal) etc.

  • Sponsorship is available for individuals not eligible for a SUNet ID through standard university affiliation, including:
  • Contractors and consultants
  • Temporary staff (casual hires, summer students)
  • Visiting faculty
  • Hospital staff from Stanford Health Care, Stanford Children’s Health, and affiliated

Note: Summer interns in programs such as SULI, CCI, and SAGE who are not hired through a job requisition are not required to complete harassment prevention training. However, interns hired through a job requisition are considered SLAC employees. As such, they must complete harassment prevention training and have been provided a base SUNet ID. They will not need sponsorship if their job duties do not require full account access.

There are 2 different types of sponsorships the university offers.

  1. Base Account: Provides a SUNet ID for login access to certain systems; does not include email services.
  2. Full Account: Includes a SUNet ID with email and additional services; incurs a monthly fee charged to the sponsor's PTA (Project-Task-Award) account. Currently, this is $19/month.

SLAC SUNET ID’s are to be sponsored only by SLAC Business Managers. Please send an email with the subject line “Secure: New SUNET ID” with the information below to your SLAC Business Manager. For a list of SLAC Business Managers who can assist with sponsorship and who support your specific area, please see the BSD Deployed Finance page.

  1. First and Last Name
  2. Email Address
  3. Date of Birth (MM/DD/YY)
  4. Base account vs. Full Account
  5. Project-Activity for full account to support the fee
  6. Business Purpose
  7. SUNet ID (if you have had this previously)
  8. Is library e-resources access needed? Yes or No

Important Notes

Setting up a SUNet ID follows Stanford standard business process time to establish the account.

Each person can have only one SUNet ID.

SUNet ID’s are active up to 1 year, but may be extended as needed.

If a sponsored employee departs from the university before the sponsorship terminates, it is up to the manager of the employee to inform Finance to end the sponsorship otherwise SLAC will continue to incur charges until the expiration date on the sponsorship.
