Ubuntu Recovery Mode | Access to Previous Kernel

Overview

This KB article is for SLAC clients having boot or kernel issues caused by a GPU driver update.

This procedure will assist you in gaining access back into your system while also turning on SSH so SLAC IT can remote into the system for further troubleshooting.

Getting into Recovery mode

  1. Turn on your computer.
  2. Wait until the UEFI/BIOS has finished loading, or has almost finished. (During this time you will probably see a logo of your computer manufacturer.)
  3. Quickly press and hold the Shift or Escape , which will bring up the GNU GRUB menu.(If you see the Ubuntu logo, you've missed the point where you can enter the GRUB menu.)
  4. Select the line which starts with "Advanced options".
  5. Then select the option "(recovery mode)" for recovery mode or the one below for the previous kernel.
