Professional data recovery with DriveSavers

You may choose to pursue for-fee professional data recovery to retrieve lost data if there is no backup. SLAC IT Service Desk can help to confirm if the hard-drive has indeed failed or otherwise inaccessible.

Note: It's important to have your data backup; for future reference please see this Code42 KB for setup instructions.

DriveSavers is the vendor that Stanford has worked with for many years. Your manager should be looped in for approval and awareness.

If the hard-drive contains scientific data only, it should be cleared to proceed.

If the hard-drive has business or any PII, moderate, or high risk data, you must contact SLAC Risk Privacy Officer, Eric Shupert, for assessment and awareness.

The type of data on the media determines the required marking, handling, transport and accountability when it is being recovered by an outside vendor.

DriveSavers alternatives:

DriveSavers is the recommended data recovery vendor by SLAC IT and assessed by Cyber.

If you would like to bring your drive to another data recovery vendor, it will have to be assessed by the Cyber team.

If you prefer to go to an alternative data recovery vendor and you agree to accompany the drive the entire time it is at the data recovery company, then it can be done without an assessment. If not, a Cyber Exception request will have to be submitted. Please work with your assigned technician.

Note for technician

If you contact DriveSavers for a quote and initiate the process on the behalf of the user, you would need to add the user name/contact info on the authorized contact list with DriveSavers, otherwise they will not talk to them. Also add the person who will handle the invoice if other than the user (Admin, etc.)

Post proof of HD's encryption in the ticket before sending out to DriveSavers if possible. They may reach out to you to provide Bitlocker recovery key.
