Network drive (V: Drive) mapping
Table of Contents
What is a network drive?
A network drive is a shared storage location that allows you to store, update, view, and share files with your team. Unlike saving files on your personal computer, a network drive keeps everything in a centralized location, making collaboration easier and ensuring files are backed up securely.
Your department may use a V: Drive or another network-based storage system. Check with your manager to confirm which drive your team uses and if you need access.
Important: You must be connected to SLAC Wi-Fi or use VPN if accessing the drive remotely.
How to access the network (V:) drive
On a Windows PC
- Connect to SLAC Wi-Fi (or use VPN if off-site).
- Open File Explorer (Press Windows + E on your keyboard).
- Click This PC from the left-hand menu.
- Scroll to under Network Location
- Choose Groups (V:)
On a Mac
- Connect to SLAC Wi-Fi (or use VPN if off-site).
- Open Finder and click Go in the top menu.
- Select Connect to Server (or press Command + K).
- In the Server Address window, enter the following: smb://slac/my_storage/Groups/%NAMEOFGROUP% (Example - smb://slac/my_storage/groups/KIPAC for KIPAC group)
- If you are on a non-SLAC managed computer, using VPN, enter: smb://win.slac.stanford.edu/my_storage/groups
- If you want to save this connection for future use, click the plus (+) sign next to the address. This will add it to your Favorite Servers list.
- Now you can click Connect to continue.
- A new window should appear with access to your Group Drive (V:).
