CMDB Rollout

SLAC is implementing a Configuration Management Database (CMDB) to maintain an accurate inventory of IT infrastructure and components, improving the lab's ability to quickly diagnose and respond to issues.

This project was initiated in response to a Department of Energy audit that required SLAC to: “Develop and maintain an accurate inventory of components that includes sufficient detail to support risk-based authorization decisions.”

The CMDB is an essential tool that empowers us to efficiently query the network and maintain a centralized inventory of configuration items (CIs). With the CMDB, we gain a clear and comprehensive view of our IT infrastructure and business processes, enabling us to swiftly identify, diagnose, and resolve issues.

Our capability to provide a detailed history of tickets related to CIs significantly enhances our ability to identify and correlate issues that may not have been immediately obvious. Since its initial release in December 2023, we have been actively expanding the CMDB's capabilities by adding innovative features, insightful reports, and valuable data sources.
